One of Texas’ most unique outdoor destinations just got even bigger.
Caprock Canyons State Park and Trailway has officially expanded by more than 2,200 acres, bringing the park’s total size to an impressive 17,500 acres. Known for its dramatic canyon views and roaming bison herd, this expansion adds even more space for visitors to explore.
The growth comes from two recent land acquisitions, including the Rocking W Ranch and Hawkins Ranch. These additions not only protect the park’s scenic views and natural resources but also create new opportunities for wildlife and outdoor recreation. The expansion even includes a large “barndominium” that will be used for future retreats and group experiences.
For visitors, this means more to see and do. The park already offers over 90 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, along with Lake Theo for swimming, fishing, and boating. With the added land, wildlife sightings are expected to increase, including quail, mule deer, bobcats, and coyotes.
One of the park’s most popular attractions—the historic Clarity Tunnel—is home to hundreds of thousands of bats during warmer months, while the park itself is recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, offering some of the best stargazing in Texas.
The bottom line: this expansion makes Caprock Canyons an even more compelling destination for Texans looking to experience wide-open landscapes, wildlife, and some of the most scenic views in the state.
